 | | The Swanage Railway 2009 Diesel Gala
The Swanage Railway 2009 Diesel Gala provided the first chance for me to spend an entire weekend at a Presevered Railway Gala. Teaming up with Ian Silvester we stayed in Swanage for the Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday to chill out and spend time photgraphing and riding the splendid line.
This Gallery shows just some of the shots possible.

 | | Elford, York, Burton Salmon, Knottingley, Peak Forest 9th-14th April
The 9th - 14th April were spent away from the South West. Exhibiting at the York Model Railway show gave us the perfect chance to tag a couple of days onto the trip either side of the Easter Weekend. We made the most of the time inbetween as well with frequent visits to Colton Jn (York) and the NRM. This collection details a very small selection of what we saw.

 | | A Day on the Clay!
On the 15th March 2008, I attended a Diesel Photographic Charter on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Although the inclement weather (which could not be helped) did hamper proceedings a little during the day, it also added some typically Cornish effects to the various scenes along the length of the line. The line had traditionally always operated Steam Charters, but there had been many requests for a Diesel Charter with Clay wagons to recreate the traditional diesel heritage of the line.
The train was formed of BR Class 37 (37142) which has been lovingly restored by the Bodmin and Wenford Mainline Diesel Group. 1 Van, 5 Clay Wagons, and 2 Brake Vans. The photographic group of 15 opted for the two vans for personal comfort above authenticity.
This gallery charts the progress of two return trips on each section of the Bodmin and Wenford.
I would personally like to extend my thanks to the Bodmin Mainline Diesel Group for taking the time to organize the event, and the crew/ ground staff who turned up on the day to provide such a professional and enthusiastic approach to the charter. Their expertise and knowledge of the line’s photographic locations was paramount to the success of the day, as was the large amounts of line site tree felling which has been completed just weeks before. Special thanks also go to Brian Aston and Sam Felce for organzing the charter and the food!
Please note that all images were taken with permission of land owners and were under the instruction of ground staff. Many of the locations used require a Lineside Pass. Please do not tresspass on private land.

 | | What's in a name?
An interesting look at some of the many names which have been applied to locomotives and units around the UK!
Not many people have included a full selection of locomotive names on their websites. It's amazing to think just how many exist.
This gallery aims to show a wide variety of plates and stickers which have been photographed since 2004/2005

 | | The Digital Effects
For quite some time now I've been looking at various fotopic websites, which now detail the use of the modern digital camera. Some people simply upload their images direct from the camera; some have mastered the basic techniques to 'finish' an image before uploading to the web. However there are very few sites which demonstrate what other modifications can be made to a digital image.
The purists may say it's wrong, however I strongly believe there is another side to digital photography which can be exploited provided your willing to teach yourself the skills required to change images from their original state into 'works of art' which can be displayed or printed.
This gallery details a selection of images which have all been created by myself and developed during 2006 using ideas from previous publications. I would be interested any comments which people may have with regards to this gallery.
If anyone would like to see any more added to this gallery, or would like a 'special' image produced then please conftact me on: b.garrett at tiscali.co.uk

 | | D1015 Western Champion 'The Original Tribute Gallery'
A Gallery dedicated to one of the best sounding best looking and best berforming 'Heritage Traction Locomotives' running around the UK today!
This gallery is dedicated to this locomotive and it's workings I've been lucky enough to photograph it working! Taken on various formats this gallery will chart the loco's operations since it's return to Mainline Running in 2000

 | | Lineside Wildlife!
Something of a unique gallery this one! Not many people tend to display this sort of thing, but I thought it was worth the effort!
When out on the lineside you do find some very odd and interesting animals! A few are worth of a photo so why not display the other side to Railway Photography. At the same time I've also included a small selection of other 'wildlife' photographs taken away from the rails, but I hope these will be just as pleasing to look at!
|
 | | The Heritage Collection
As I seem to be getting a resonable collection of various non railway vintage items. This gallery will be dedicated to those found and photographed on my travels around the UK and abroad! Buses Feature quite prominatly in this gallery, but various types of road traction will appear in this gallery to add some extra interest to the Railway Scene

 | | Dawlish Air Day 2007
Each Year the Devon seaside town of Dawlish holds it's annual Air Day during the Carnival Week. Each year the event seems to get better and better. In 2007 the event saw the first visit of the Eurofighter Typoon.
|
 | | Yeovilton 2007
07-07-07 saw RNAS Yeovilton hold their 2007 International Air Day with a theme of 'Falklands to the Future'.
Although there was a look back at the past, there was a large section of the event dedicated to looking to the future, and the roles of the Royal Navy.
The event was in sunshine for most of the day and proved to be an amazing event.

The Needles Sub extends from Barstow, in the west to Needles, in the east, well over 150 miles of the desert railroading at its prime. You'll find ancient volcanoes, high plateaus and mountains, and many dry lakes and washes. The BNSF trains through this area of Southern California are unrelenting. The congestion is so concentrated that simply deciding to move from one location to another will almost guarantee that you will miss some train. The volume of traffic here is only overshadowed by the barren beauty that is found in the many valleys, mountains, and plateaus through which the tracks pass.

 | | Jack London Square, Pinole (Oakland, California) and CALTrain Operations near San Francisco
Situated just across the bay from San Francisco, Jack London Square boasts the opertunity to see Locomotives and stock running down the middle of the street!
Amtrak run passenger services to Oakland Station, while Union Pacific services can be photographed moving in and out of the Oakland Docks complex.
It's a unique view into something which out UK 'Health and Saftey' counterparts would have some trouble in understanding!
CALtrain operates between San Fransisco and San Jose, it's a fast and efficiant service using push pull locomotives and stock.

 | | San Francisco Street/ Cable Cars
The famous San Francisco Street Cars run between Fishermans Wharf and Castro on 17th Street in the City Centre.
The San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) constantly renews its historic street car fleet through the work of it's world-renowned old traditions.
The impressive fleet is part of an extensive transportation network within the city, and it plays a key roll in moving people around the network. Vintage Trollys and Streamliner PCC Streetcars can be seen out running on a daily basis around the city, and a photograph of these wonderful machines is always a must!!
Most of the PCC Steamliner Cars are also numbered in the same range as the British Built, Class 52 Locomotive, which makes seeing them even more fun for those who can remember the names!

 | | Lunar Eclipse 03-03-07
March 3rd 2007 saw one of the best Lunar Eclipses ever seen. With clear night skys in Taunton it was possible to set up a tripod to record the event between 22:00 and 23:30.
I have never managed to witness this type of Eclipse previously as it's always been cloudy, so to be able to produce some very reasonable images from the evening makes it even more pleasing

 | | The Gilze - Rijen 'Air Day' Saturday 18th June 2005
On Saturday the 18th June 2005, Gilze Rijen (nr Tilberg in Holland) airbase opened it's doors to the public for a fantastic military air day.
I was invited along with a group of experianced aircraft photographers to try my hand at somthing a little bit different!
Having already had a stab at the Dawlish Air Day (on a much smaller scale!) in 2004. I wasn't quite prepared for the experiance of a full European Event. 350 images later I was somewhat amazed at just how much we managed to cram into one day.
This gallery details some of my more interesting shots, many thanks to Kev Wills for the invite!!
